From 1976 until 1988, Porsche 924 were available in Germany as sports cars. It was the first Porsche with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive setup with water cooling. Additionally, it was the first Porsche with an automated transmission. Originally conceived as a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche, the 924 was meant to serve as VW's premier coupé and Porsche's replacement for the 914.
