Zenith returns to its Chronomaster Sport collection with 2 new El Primero chronographs, setting a new tone for the brand. It's been 5 years since we've seen the all-new Chronomaster Sport, and the new execution takes a traditional approach to the concept, clearly targeting some of the category's staples. As a Zenith El Primero, it has a strong traditional edge built in. It also has an accessible design language, something Zenith has done well while still pushing the El Primero into new territory.
The Chronomaster Sport Replica luxury watches has always been one of El Primero's more progressive offerings, quick to adapt to new trends (for better or worse) and able to attract new customers who valued the modernity of their timepieces. Released in 2015, the watch was 45mm in diameter and over 14mm thick, with oversized hour-markers and hands and chunky, somewhat clumsy numerals in sub-dials. The three-color color scheme has been dropped in favor of a unified exterior color that matches the dial. While beautiful in some ways, it falls into uncomfortable situations in the context of the El Primero name.

Of course, a version of the El Primero movement has been around for 12 years in the Daytona (ref. 16520), so you could say it's a fitting resemblance. As a Zenith, this isn't your standard chronograph, and it differs from watches like the Daytona in a few important ways. Most notable is the chronograph itself, which in the Chronomaster Sport takes just 10 seconds to circle the dial, tracking every tenth of a second along the way. You'll notice the unusual layout of the bezel that allows for this measurement, it replaces the more traditional tachymeter you'd normally find occupying this area. It's not as intense as the Land Rover 21 we've shown you here, but it's arguably more useful in measuring the types of things normal humans need to measure.
The dial itself is dominated by three oversized tones that feature the Zenith tri-tone treatment we know and love. Here they appear in blue, anthracite and light gray. The rest of the dial is an exercise in restraint, with only the minute and second hashes appearing between the applied hour bars, which are themselves beveled and polished. A date window appears at 4:30 in a color that matches the dial. The simple dial with prominent, legible hands and hour markers is reminiscent of the rare De Luca of the late 80s and early 90s, which is a very good thing. The stainless steel case measures 41mm in diameter, and thanks to the protruding bezel, every bit of it is worn on the wrist. The lugs feature a steep polished chamfer that runs along the edge to the wrist in an aggressive but even curve. From top to bottom, this narrows the lugs considerably to form the watch around the wrist, effectively hiding its roughly 14mm thickness. Overall, it fits well, and if you're the type of person who finds the Daytona too small, this should be perfect for you. Plus, you can actually get one of these.
Inside the Chronomaster Sport, the El Primero 3600 beats at 5 Hz and offers a 60-hour reserve. This is the same movement we saw in 2019's Chronomaster 2 Limited Edition, a watch very similar to what we see here but with a more conceptual execution. The Chronomaster Sport was the regular production model, and it was the 3600's debut. The movement is visible through the exhibition caseback, and while it's not pretty, it's certainly interesting. As mentioned, the chronograph takes readings every tenth of a second and is read via a pinion connected to the escapement itself (rather than borrowed from a gear train). There are 3,600 seconds in an hour, and this movement beats at 36,000 VpH, and it's easy to count from there.
The new Chronomaster Sport is equipped with a steel Oyster bracelet with polished center links. The edges of the brushed links have polished bevels, providing some visual depth to the entire bracelet. The fit and finish of the bracelet isn't as good as what you'd find on a Daytona, but it's fine for everyday use. The fabric strap is also available in blue or black, depending on the dial color, which seems to fit the overall aesthetic better.
