The results of the clinical trial, conducted in San Francisco and Seattle, have been eagerly anticipated by public health officials and clinicians who are looking for new ways to prevent STIs, which have been on the rise in the United States and many other parts of the world for the past six years.
Researchers examined an approach known as doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (or DoxyPEP), in which people take 200 milligrams of the antibiotic doxycycline within three days of having sex without a condom.
They recruited from public health clinics in San Francisco and Seattle. To qualify, participants had to have had gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis, in the previous year. Participants were randomized to receive doxycycline or no doxycycline in an open-label study design.
The trial was designed to allow an independent team monitoring the trial’s safety to look at interim results, to see if the intervention proved effective enough that it could be stopped early. Data from 554 participants showed that those who were randomized to take doxycycline had substantially fewer infections than those who did not receive doxycycline, and this reduction in STIs occurred both in participants taking HIV PrEP as well as those living with HIV. Doxycycline was generally safe and well tolerated.
At this point, doxycycline after sex is a targeted intervention for certain populations, in this case men who have sex with men or transgender women who have already had an STI in the past year,” said Annie Luetkemeyer, MD, a professor of infectious diseases at UC San Francisco. She led the study with Connie Celum, MD, professor of global health, medicine, and epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
“Doxycycline as PEP may be similar to HIV PrEP, which isn’t for everyone, but is an effective strategy for those at increased risk for HIV infection,” Luetkemeyer said. “Future recommendations for doxycycline use as an STI prevention strategy will need to consider effectiveness in different populations, as well as antimicrobial resistance.”
The trial has yet to determine whether intermittent use of doxycycline may lead to increased antibiotic resistance in the bacteria that cause STIs or that naturally live on the body, and whether it may lead to negative changes in the bacteria of the gut.
Researchers will present updated effectiveness and adherence data from the approximately 630 participants who were enrolled by the time the study closed, along with antibiotic resistance data at AIDS 2022, the 24th International AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada and virtually July 29 to August 2.

"Currently, the company and Ningde Second Nuclear Power Co Ltd are carrying out various preparatory work for the construction of Ningde unit 5 and unit 6 in an orderly manner," it said. "Construction will begin when the Permit for Nuclear Power Station Construction has been obtained from the National Nuclear Safety Administration."
CGN noted Ningde was the first nuclear power plant to be constructed and put into operation in Fujian Province. The plant currently comprises four 1018 MWe CPR-1000 reactors, which began commercial operation between April 2013 and July 2016.
"As of 30 June 2023, the cumulative on-grid electricity of the four units in the first phase of the project is 257.9 billion kilowatt-hours," it said.
CGN also said approval had been received for two Hualong One units as units 1 and 2 of the Shidaowan plant "under Huaneng Group, which is fully participated in the project construction by CGN".
China Huaneng noted the two units have already "undergone a comprehensive safety assessment review and been incorporated into the national plan". It added: "The expansion project of Shidaowan Nuclear Power Plant Phase I is the second large-scale pressurised water reactor nuclear power project developed by China Huaneng Holdings after the Phase II project of Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant."
The Shidaowan site is already home to the demonstration High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor-Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM), which reached full power operation for the first time in December 2022. The HTR-PM features two small reactors that drive a single 210 MWe turbine. It is owned by a consortium led by China Huaneng (47.5%), with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) subsidiary China Nuclear Engineering Corporation (32.5%) and Tsinghua University's Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (20%), which is the research and development leader.
Meanwhile, CNNC subsidiary China Nuclear Power Co Ltd informed the Shanghai Stock Exchange that it had received approval for units 1 and 2 of the Xudabao (also known as Xudapu) plant. While not disclosing the reactor design planned for the two units, it said each unit would have a capacity of 1291 MW.
"CNNC Liaoning Nuclear Power Co Ltd, which is controlled by our company, is the owner unit of the approved project, responsible for project investment, construction and operation management," CNNC noted. "At present, the project site is steadily and orderly promoting various preparatory work before the start of construction."
The Xudabao project was originally expected to comprise six Chinese-designed CAP1000 reactors, with units 1 and 2 in the first phase. Site preparation began in November 2010. The National Development and Reform Commission gave its approval for the project in January 2011. China's National Nuclear Safety Administration announced its approval of the site selection for Xudabao units 1 and 2 in April 2014. However, construction of those units has yet to start.

In simple terms, a refrigeration cycle's mission is heat absorption and heat rejection. As any HVAC instructor will tell you (emphatically), you can't make cold, you can just remove heat. The refrigeration cycle, sometimes called a heat pump cycle, is a means of routing heat away from the area you want to cool. This is accomplished by manipulating the pressure of the working refrigerant (air, water, synthetic refrigerants, etc.) through a cycle of compression and expansion.
That’s not the full picture, of course, but that’s the basic idea. Now, let’s get into the equipment that helps execute that job. There are certainly other components in most loops, but most would agree the four fundamental elements of a basic cycle are as follows:
The compressor
Compression is the first step in the refrigeration cycle, and a compressor is the piece of equipment that increases the pressure of the working gas. Refrigerant enters the compressor as low-pressure, low-temperature gas, and leaves the compressor as a high-pressure, high-temperature gas.

Compression can be achieved through a number of different mechanical processes, and because of that, several compressor designs are used in HVAC and refrigeration today. Other examples exist, but some popular choices are:
The condenser
The condenser, or condenser coil, is one of two types of heat exchangers used in a basic refrigeration loop. This component is supplied with high-temperature high-pressure, vaporized refrigerant coming off the compressor. The condenser removes heat from the hot refrigerant vapor gas vapor until it condenses into a saturated liquid state, a.k.a. condensation.
These components come in a few different designs.
