Walt Disney World Resort officially reopened its parks in July 2020, and it has been steadily hopping back to life ever since! While certain experiences may still be limited during this time, the theme parks are returning to normal operations. In addition to character pop-ups and cavalcades, some modified experiences are slowly beginning to return, including live entertainment and parades! We also have the ongoing Disney World's 50th Anniversary, an 18-month celebration that began Oct. 1!

We are so hoppy to say that indoor character meet-and-greets (though still distanced) are back at Disney World! Lots of entertainment continues to return this year, such as Festival of Fantasy parade, Finding Nemo: the Musical, Fantasmic! and more. Entertainment is what really sets Disney World apart and we're so excited for more entertainers to return!

In October, Disney introduced the brand-new Disney Genie service to the My Disney Experience app. This free digital service guides you through the theme parks (as your own personal genie), with tips that help maximize your time and a personalized itinerary based on your interests. You can upgrade to the Disney Genie+ service, which allows you to select priority access through new Lightning Lane entrances to save time in lines for attractions. We hop into more details later in this guide! And yes, this means the FastPass+ service is officially retired.
In order to better manage capacity, Disney World has implemented a new theme park reservation system that requires all guests to obtain a reservation for park entry in advance (the only exception right now is Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park or Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park which does not require a reservation to attend). Theme park tickets are required to make reservations, so make sure you buy your tickets right away! Find out more information about the Disney Park Pass reservation system in our separate blog post.

Guests with passes or tickets that include the Park Hopper option must make a Disney Park Pass reservation for the first park they plan to visit and enter that first park prior to visiting another. Additionally, there are specific Park Hopper hours — Park Hopper hours begin at 2 p.m. each day and end at the park’s scheduled close time, and entry is still subject to capacity limits (though to date, capacity limits have only interfered with guests' ability to hop once). as they could start earlier at a later date, depending on the day and park. Many restaurants and special experiences remain closed, but more steadily continue to reopen. There has also been a shift from a 180-day booking window to a 60-day booking window for reservations moving forward.

Ericsson files patent infringement lawsuit against Apple over 5G

A leader in cellular communications, the Swedish company previously sued Apple in October in the US District Court for Eastern District of Texas, following the breakdown of negotiations over the renewal of a seven-year license agreement struck in 2015. The license agreement covered patents of 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies used in iPhones. In the breakdown of negotiations, Ericsson sued Apple over the tech giant “unfairly trying to reduce royalty rates.”

However, as the prior agreement expired, Ericsson, in the patent infringement lawsuit, accused Apple of using their technology without a license, infringing their patents for 5G. Demanding collection of the royalty rate, Ericsson agreed that a new license agreement should be drawn up promptly. The most recent lawsuit has been filed in the District Court for the Western District of Texas.

Apple has faced similar cases of infringement of patents, including Motorola, which sued Apple over their touchscreen sensor patent. Apple released a statement over the use of “fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing” (FRAND). In the statement, Apple warned of “excessive royalties,” responding to the negotiations with Ericsson. They thought that net payments should be decreased in the renewal of the license agreement, compared to the one drawn up in 2015.

Ericsson and its Chief Executive Officer Borje Ekholm were accused in a U.S. lawsuit of misleading investors about the company’s role in bribes allegedly paid to a terrorist organization ISIS to win business in Iraq.

The suit, which also names Chief Financial Officer Carl Mellander, was filed by investor David Nyy in New York federal court on Thursday and seeks class-action status. Nyy claims actions by the telecommunications company violated U.S. securities laws and resulted in “significant losses and damage” to investors.

Ericsson, which paid more than $1 billion in 2019 to avoid U.S. prosecution in a long-running corruption probe, revealed last month that an internal investigation showed its possible involvement in the payments to ISIS. That disclosure, along with subsequent developments, sent company shares down by about a third.

The U.S. Department of Justice has since accused Ericsson of violating its deferred prosecution agreement and says the company failed to make adequate disclosures about its operations in Iraq before entering into the 2019 agreement.

A report last week from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists detailed allegations about Ericsson’s practices in Iraq, which included the claim about payments to ISIS.Stockholm-based Ericsson said in a statement Friday it learned of the U.S. legal action after its the annual report was finalized Thursday. Washington State juice maker shut down by federal judge for toxins

FDA found juice products at Valley Processing at 108 Blaine Ave in Sunnyside, WA, with inorganic arsenic and patulin, both toxins that pose a health risk to consumers.

Judge Stanley A Bastian on Jan. 14 approved a Consent Decree for Permanent Injunction against Valley Processing, closing the company that employed 71 people in Washington’s Yakima Valley.

Three manufacturing plants, an ambient or “Mojo” warehouse, a cold room, and three coolers are included in the U.S. District Court for Eastern Washington Decree. All the facilities are located in Sunnyside.

Mary Ann Bliesner, owner and president of Valley Processing, is also named as a defendant. The decree applies to all directors, partnerships, corporations, subsidiaries, and affiliates, who all must adhere to it.

“Defendants represent to the court that, with the exception of holding and shipping products for destruction pursuant . . . at the time of the entry of this Decree, they are not in processing, manufacturing, preparing, packing, holding or distributing any type of food,” according to the decree.

If Valley Processing wants to resume “processing, manufacturing, preparing, packing, holding, or distributing food” they first must give 90 days of advance notice to FDA.

The juice company will also be required to hire an expert or experts with no personal or financial ties — other than a consulting agreement — with the company. The expert or experts must, by qualified reason of background, education, training, and experience help to implement sanitation control programs in a manufacturing environment.

Other areas of expertise required include pest control, employee health, and hygiene.

The decree orders the defendants to stop distributing adulterated juice products until the company complies with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and other requirements listed in the consent decree. In a complaint filed on behalf of the FDA on Nov. 6, 2020, the agency stated that Valley Processing, Inc.’s juice products contained inorganic arsenic and patulin toxins at levels that can pose health risks to consumers.

FDA investigators observed that the defendants processed juice under grossly insanitary conditions and failed to adhere to relevant food safety standards. This included storing grape juice concentrate contaminated with filth and mold in off-site storage tanks and covered barrels outside for several years. Despite the contamination, the defendants combined this juice concentrate with newer lots and distributed the mixture to consumers. This included the distribution of juice for use in school lunch programs. The complaint states that the defendants promised to discontinue using the contaminated juice, but a subsequent inspection by the FDA in 2019 showed the defendants continued to blend the older juice with newer juice for distribution.

“Food processors who do not comply with FDA regulations can put consumers’ health and well-being in danger. With this consent decree, we’re taking action to protect Americans, including children in this case, from consuming foods that have been processed in violation of the law,” said Judy McMeekin, Pharm.D., FDA’s Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs. “The FDA is fully committed to taking appropriate measures against those who disregard food safety standards and distribute adulterated food to the public.”

Human rights advocates, activists and politicians from across the world have increasingly criticized the IOC for holding the games in China amid reports of human rights violations — including the detention and torture of the Uyghurs, an ethnic minority group, and anti-democracy crackdowns in Hong Kong.

"In the face of genocide, Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in China are looking to the world for support," Rep. Gregory Meeks said in a statement Monday, after Democrats and Republicans from the congressional House Foreign Affairs Committee introduced a resolution urging the IOC to move the games "unless the Chinese government ends its ongoing crimes against the Uyghur people."

In February, the BBC reported that independent estimates show more than 1 million men and women — mostly of the predominantly Muslim and indigenous Uyghurs population — are being held in Chinese "re-education" camps, where harrowing stories of rape and violence have emerged.

"By turning a blind eye to the [People's Republic of China's] gross human rights violations in Xinjiang, the IOC is betraying its own charter and legitimizing the PRC's actions at a time when the international community should be lock-step in condemnation," Meeks, 69, said.

GOP Rep. Michael McCaul called the dilemma "the moral test of our time.""By granting the CCP an opportunity to cover up its atrocities and improve its image on the global stage, the IOC is violating its own principles and tarnishing its own brand," McCaul, 59, said.

"We're not gonna punish our athletes who've prepared all their lives for this moment," Sen. Mitt Romney said late last month, according to Newsweek. "But we're going to make sure we make it very clear we do not support the Beijing Olympics."

United States skier Mikaela Shiffrin came into the slalom portion of the Alpine combined race in fifth place. The 26-year-old star then failed to finish the event after she crashed about 10 gates into her run.

After failing to finish in the top three of that event, Shiffrin will leave the Beijing Olympics without an individual medal.

"Oh, man, I don't know if anybody has failed that hard with so many opportunities maybe in the history of the Olympics," Shiffrin told NBC following the race. "But I'll take it. I mean, it is a joke. That's fine. I just really selfishly wanted to have a good run of slalom down this hill, and I'll be left wanting there."

Shiffrin will have one final chance to earn an Olympic medal on Saturday when she competes in the mixed team parallel slalom competition. In addition, she will become just the second woman in Olympic history to compete in all six Alpine events.The United States men's hockey team suffered a shocking 3-2 shootout loss to Slovakia in the quarterfinals of the Olympics. The Americans went 0-for-5 in the shootout and Slovakia winger Peter Cehlarik recorded the game-winning goal on the team's fourth attempt.

With the loss, Team USA is done at these Olympics and will not medal.

The United States led Slovakia 2-1 with under a minute to go in regulation before Slovakia tied the game. American goaltender Strauss Mann was terrific in net as he recorded 34 saves and stopped four of the five Slovakian attempts in the shootout.

Team USA began the third period with a 2-1 lead after Nick Abruzzese and Sam Hentges had scored earlier in the game. The United States had a chance to get an insurance goal when they had a 5-on-3 power-play in the third period, but failed to cash in on the opportunity.

This marks the third consecutive Olympics in which Team USA has failed to earn a medal. Their last medal came in Vancouver in 2010 when the Americans earned a silver medal.
