De Beers Group partnered with leading London-based fashion trends consultancy, Adorn Insight, to review De Beers Group’s consumer research data since the start of the pandemic and overlay it with key fashion trends. The result was three prevailing design themes jewelers can expect to see for the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.

The three key trends identified were: craft’s new cool factor, natural beauties, and invest in the best. Thesehighlight that the pandemic is likely to influence consumer design preferences with enhanced appreciation for craftmanship and bespoke design, a greater desire for designs and materials that reference the natural world, and a preference for investing in timeless pieces.

Cool Crafting. The new cool factor of crafting sprang from consumer behavior during lockdown. With both time on their hands and nostalgia for homemade goods playing a role, consumers rapidly turned to activities such as baking bread, embroidery, coloring, puzzles, and more.

Jewelers can capitalize on this trend by underscoring customization—especially for those who can create jewelry as well as sell it. Design-wise, the craft look features everything from rich enamel coloring to imperfections celebrated as beauty.The pandemic—along with wildfires and hurricanes--also heightened consumer concern around the environment and climate change. These concerns have been present, but it took a global lockdown to show how reducing activities such as air travel and driving could have such a rapid and measurable positive effect on the world. In many urban areas with heavy traffic, air quality was noticeably improved within weeks, and consumers in suburban areas noted the return of some animals that were long thought to be gone from the area.

In jewelry trends, this is expressed through the use of organic materials like wood, leather, and more in combination with natural gemstones and diamonds. Using diamonds in the state “as nature intended” also plays into this trend, as well as into the crafting trend of beautiful imperfection.
The third trend amplifies something that’s also been trending: a trend away from disposable and toward items that last. Consumers still wish to indulge themselves, but they’re focusing on buying less but better and investing in items that stand the test of time and represent value that’s not only financial but also emotional and practical. And, like consumers did in 2008 and 2009, the key is understatement, where it’s now considered tasteless to flash wealth while so many others are suffering economic hardship.

But what happens when you’re not sure if your mask is real?

Between the time the pandemic began and the year ended, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized over 14.6 million counterfeit face masks entering the US, the agency told CNN.

N95 masks are considered the gold standard for mask usage, but counterfeit doppelgängers may threaten Americans’ safety. Not meeting US safety standards means they may not filter out airborne particles effectively, the agency said.The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is a part of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that focuses on worker safety and health.

Before filtering facepiece respirators — a fancy term that includes N95 masks — can be used in any workplace, they must be certified by NIOSH.

When finding out if an N95 mask is fake or not, NIOSH markings are your compass. But there’s some vetting you can do before you even have a mask in hand.
Does the listing call the product “genuine” or “real”? Legitimate companies don’t need to tell buyers their products are real — at least not in the product name.
Have reviews been left on the product, or on the seller? Buyers unhappy with the product may reveal that it is poorly made or illegitimate.
Is the price too good to be true? It probably is.
Is the seller selling the same items over time, or keeping with trends? Legitimate businesses tend to stay consistent.
Does the seller put their contact information in images? If so, they may be skirting around marketplace policy to keep interactions between buyers and sellers on the site.NIOSH-approved masks have an approval label on or within the mask packaging — either on the box or in the users’ instructions. The mask should also have an abbreviated approval marking.

The approval number on your mask should begin with “TC.” The mask should also have a NIOSH logo printed on it. Fake masks aren’t the only counterfeit products being sold, nor the only scam to capitalize on the pandemic.

Criminal organizations are also trying to sell counterfeit pharmaceuticals, other PPE and medical devices to “unsuspecting American consumers,” CBP Executive Director for Trade Policies and Programs, John Leonard, told CNN.

Covid-19 has been a fertile time for other scams of all kinds to proliferate — most recently regarding vaccines.

What’s an FFP2 mask?

FFP2 masks are a type of medical respirator mask, just like FFP3, N95 and N99 masks.

They prevent wearers from breathing in contaminants in the air and are said to be more protective than fabric masks or surgical masks.FFP2 masks have a minimum of 94 percent filtration percentage and a maximum of eight percent leakage to the inside.

They aren’t shaped to your face but are held in place by the elastic ear loop.You can wear FFP2 masks for about three to eight hours, depending on environmental factors.

The advice reads: “In areas where Covid-19 is widespread and physical distancing of at least one meter cannot be achieved, medical masks should be worn by people who are aged 60 years old or over and those who have underlying health conditions.”Non-medical masks, also known as fabric masks, should be worn by people who have no Covid-19 symptoms where Covid-19 is widespread and where physical distancing of at least one meter can’t be achieved.

This may include people who are in close contact with others such as social workers and cashiers.

Everyone must wear a fabric mask or surgical mask when on public transport, at work, and in shops in the UK.

Everyday fabric masks have no filtering effect, but they can still help to prevent the spread of viruses such as coronavirus.

They are much cheaper than FFP2 masks and have been deemed good enough for most of the general public to wear on their limited trips out in the UK.

Increasingly though, governments are issuing stricter guidance on which masks people should be wearing for everyday activities. Whichever mask you choose, it will be more effective in protecting you from COVID-19 when combined with other measures. These usually consist of several layers of fabric, and attach to the face using ear loops or head ties. This makes physical distancing and ventilation particularly important when wearing one.

Fabric masks should ideally have three layers, including a middle layer, which can be a disposable filter. The inner layer should be made from a fabric which easily absorbs moisture from the breath, like cotton. The middle layer should ideally be made from “spunbound” polypropylene – a man-made material with a random arrangement of fibres, like spaghetti on a plate – while the outermost layer should be made from a fabric that repels droplets and moisture, e.g., polyester, or a polyester and cotton blend.

When choosing a fabric mask, avoid those with only a single layer of fabric, and look for one with a bendable strip of metal or plastic that can be moulded over the bridge of the nose, for a better fit. A recent investigation by the British consumer magazine, Which?, found a huge variation in the ability of fabric masks to filter particles, with the best filtering out 99% of bacteria-sized particles – as good as surgical masks – and the worst managing just 7%. Three-layer masks, particularly those which included a disposable filter insert, tended to be the most effective. The type of fabric also mattered: the worst-performing masks consisted of a single layer of mostly polyester. Ideally, Which? suggested to look for a mix of different fabrics such as cotton, polypropylene and different types of polyester.

Also, since fabric masks are primarily designed to protect other people, steer clear of other people wearing a flimsy-looking mask or no mask at all.

Surgical masks: Like cloth masks, these are relatively loose-fitting face coverings, which attach around the ears with elastic, and are designed to protect other people against any large respiratory droplets that the wearer emits. However, because they are worn by health workers and constitute a form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), their production is regulated and the level of protection they provide is more consistent than fabric masks. This is the reason the French health ministry gave for recommending them.

Surgical masks are often light blue in colour, and made of a combination of paper and plastics. They are disposable, so potentially more harmful for the environment.

Respirators: These are designed to protect healthcare workers from droplets in the air. They fit snugly against the face, meaning both inhaled and exhaled air is filtered through. This also means they need to be carefully fitted to ensure the mask creates a full seal – otherwise unfiltered air will come through the gaps between mask and face. Some respirators have one-way valves that make them easier to breathe through, but these should be avoided as they do not protect the wearer from spreading the virus.

Respirators have different names depending on where they’re manufactured and the degree to which they filter air. For instance, a N95 mask is manufactured in the US and is designed to filter out at least 95% of very small (0.3 micron) particles, including bacteria and viruses. FFP2 face masks are the European equivalent, and meet World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for protection against COVID-19 – they filter at least 94% of particles and are designed to be used for a maximum of eight hours. FFP3 masks filter at least 99% of particles, and typically have a valve because the filtration material is much thicker.
