Inception is a popular film directed by Christopher Nolan - a famous British-American filmmaker. The plot of Inception can be defined as its main strength because of the fact that it reveals the little-known world of dreaming. The film tells a story about a skillful thief, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who steals important information by infiltrating into the subconscious of the victims while they are dreaming. This essay aims at analyzing the film from the philosophical perspective. The modern cinematography is becoming less and less concentrated on creating really meaningful films. That is because of the transformations that the industry of entertainment faces. The matter is that people, overloaded with the unlimited flow of information, are looking for films that do not require intellectual efforts to understand the main idea. Thus, people are looking for films that can help them to relax and forget about daily routine. However, Inception is not one of those easy-to-understand movies that can entertain a viewer, but one of those that require thinking and analysis. Despite this fact, Inception turned out to be a complete success. The main reason for being successful is that the film raises an important philosophical problem that we all are interested to find the right answer to.
Inception can be defined as an extremely accurate illustration of a philosophical problem. This philosophical problem is dream argument of Rene Descartes. We all know that it is possible to think that life is nothing but just a dream. In the film, the main character illustrates this concept by becoming a part of other people’s dreams. It is important to note that the victims cannot identify whether they are dreaming or not. Indeed, when we sleep, our dreams are usually too realistic to think that they are not true. That is why the dream argument is very suitable for a better understanding of the film’s main idea as well as the process of dreaming. According to Descartes’ dream argument, in order to be able to distinguish the reality from dreams, we use cognitive senses. However, these senses cannot be fully trusted because our brain is able to create extremely realistic dreams. That is why the senses should be tested and carefully evaluated in order to define whether the situation is real or not.
However, many people as well as Cobb, one of the film’s characters, do not care whether they are dreaming or not if what they experience is satisfying for them. David Hume, a prominent Scottish philosopher, had the same opinion regarding the process of distinguishing the reality from dreams. He states that dreams are limited to the knowledge and experiences we already have. Obviously, the fact that we have dreams means that we also have a reality as these two conditions are interconnected. This proves the idea of Cobb that we do not have to worry about the ability to distinguish reality from dreams.
It is possible to conclude that the ideas presented in the film Inception are closely linked to philosophy. We all have the ability to experience extremely realistic dreams from time to time. Our dreams are connected to the reality we experience on daily basis. This fact allows us to understand that if we have dreams, then we have a reality. This important discovery can be considered as the main factor in the process of distinguishing dreams from reality. However, the need to distinguish them is not really important.
