While jazz was distinguished by its improvisational style, intricate harmonies, and use of conventional instruments like saxophones, trumpets, and pianos, hip-hop was recognized for its extensive use of samples, breakbeats, and basslines. Solar especially captures this on song State of Clarity.Guru's Jazzmatazz Vol 4 featured live jazz musicians performing with hip-hop in an effort to bridge the gap between these two genres.
