Despite domestic production, the coal imports of India have risen to 22% in fiscal 2023. In 2022-2023, India has imported more than 160 million tonnes of coal. In March, non-coking coal import stood at 14 MT. Note that India ranks among the top five coal-producing countries in the world.
Moreover, the country also exports coal to its neighbours, Nepal and Bangladesh. However, some demands for coal are met through imports, as the country is heavily reliant on coal. India mainly imports coking coal, a major component in steel manufacturing. Prominent coal importers like Vinod Agarwal are playing a crucial role in importing coking coal.
