for men showed New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady loafing
indoors in the brand’s cozy shearling-lined slippers, looking barely
awake and exuding little energy. These days, you won’t find Mr. Brady’s
mellow smirk anywhere in the 41-year-old company’s New York City
showroom. Instead, much livelier imagery sits alongside displays of the
fuzz-filled boots. One framed photo captures Kofi Siriboe, a Ghanian
actor with nearly a million Instagram followers, bounding down a city
street dressed entirely in red, save for the beige Uggs on his feet. In
another, Migos rapper Offset kicks out his leg as he exits an SUV—an Ugg
logo clearly visible on his boot’s sole.
The Ugg comeback for both sexes has been coming for a while.

They drafted in Jeff Daniels and Mr Gisele, Tom Brady, in 2016 for an
ad featuring The Dude strumming a guitar while Brady napped on a sofa,
both wearing Uggs. It was luxe lounging for the whisky and Bon Iver
crowd. A year later, in 2017, Cardi B announced that it was “officially
Ugg season” on Instagram and Heron Preston, a mate of Virgil Abloh,
captioned his Ugg boot-wearing Instagram with: “We not playing games no
more.”

Walking through a railway station one morning, I’m struck by some huge,
brightly coloured posters for the latest Ugg campaign (shockingly
subtitled: “Ugglife”); there’s Slick Woods breastfeeding her baby and
Ama Elsesser cradling her sister, Paloma. I go online and see the other
stars of their ad campaign: Luka Sabbat and his dad, Kim Gordon and
daughter Coco together. They’re slick and well shot.
Despite the ignominy its footwear has suffered as fodder for punchlines,

is determined to stomp its way deep into the men’s market. “We’ve been
really much more serious and strategic about our men’s business,” said
Andrea O’Donnell, the president of fashion lifestyle at Deckers, the
Goleta, Calif.-based company that owns Ugg. Ms. O’Donnell, who joined
the company in 2016 and Ian Stewart who joined Deckers as VP of
marketing in 2017, have redirected the men’s marketing strategy away
from Mr.Brady and his sleep-inducing slippers toward brash Instagram
influencers in trendier lace-up boots.
Ugg has also refreshed its men’s collection by pursuing high-fashion collaborations.

It has worked with utility-minded New York designer Heron Preston, on
waterproof “urban tech” pull-on boots, and bicoastal indie-darlings
Eckhaus Latta, on a curious square-toed boot. Another joint effort, with
A Bathing Ape, the legendary Japanese streetwear brand, yielded a
camo-and-shearling sneaker that rapper Lil Wayne modeled in ads.
