How to Create a DIY Dinosaur-Themed Centerpiece for a Party from Darren Demers's blog

Are you planning a dinosaur-themed party and looking for the perfect DIY decoration? Let me guide you through creating an adorable dinosaur centerpiece that will be the talk of the party! Whether it's for a "Three-Rex" birthday or a Jurassic-themed event, this unique centerpiece is both eye-catching and fun to make. I recently created this for my nephew’s third birthday party, and the results were amazing! Here’s how you can create your own.

Materials and Preparation

The first step in creating a stunning DIY dinosaur centerpiece is gathering all the necessary materials. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:

  • A hula hoop
  • Spray paint (color of your choice)
  • A wooden circle base
  • Wooden craft cubes
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Acrylic craft paint (brown)
  • All-purpose primer
  • Floral foam block
  • Mod Podge
  • Dinosaur figurine (plastic)
  • Yarn (color to match the dinosaur)
  • Scissors or a small digging tool

Once you have everything ready, it’s time to start crafting!

Step 1: Preparing the Hula Hoop

Start by opening the hula hoop and removing any beads inside. Lay the hula hoop flat on a large piece of cardboard or another work surface in a well-ventilated area (preferably outdoors). Grab your spray paint and evenly coat the hula hoop with color. You may need several layers of paint to achieve full coverage, allowing it to dry completely between each coat. Once you're satisfied with the color and the hula hoop is dry, set it aside.

Step 2: Making the Base for the Centerpiece

Next, let’s work on the base. Take your wooden circle and fill any holes with an all-purpose primer. Smooth out the surface using your finger to remove any excess primer. This will help create a clean, even base for the rest of the centerpiece.

Then, take four wooden craft cubes and hot glue them to the bottom of the wooden circle—position them at each corner like little feet to elevate the centerpiece off the surface it will sit on. Once the glue dries, flip the wooden circle over, and you’re ready to paint.

Step 3: Staining the Wooden Platform

To create a rustic look for the base, you’ll make a faux stain using brown acrylic paint mixed with water. Pour an equal amount of paint and water into a cup and stir them together. Using a paintbrush, lightly coat the surface of the wooden circle in the same direction as the wood grain. This will create a natural, textured look. Allow it to dry completely. Sealing the paint with a top coat is optional, depending on how long you plan to use the centerpiece.

Step 4: Painting the Foam Block

When it comes to painting porous materials like floral foam, it’s important to prep the surface. I initially tried painting the foam directly with acrylic paint, but it didn’t work well. Instead, apply a layer of Mod Podge to the foam block first and let it dry. Once dry, mix equal parts Mod Podge and acrylic paint to coat the foam. This mixture will give the foam a smoother texture and richer color. Use a sponge brush for even coverage. If you’re in a hurry, you can use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process.

Step 5: Attaching the Dinosaur to the Foam Block

Now for the fun part—attaching the dinosaur! Choose a plastic dinosaur figurine that fits the size of your foam block. To secure the dinosaur, tie a piece of yarn around its ankles and double-knot it. Then, take that same yarn and tie it around the foam block. The yarn should blend in with both the dinosaur and foam, so if your dinosaur is green, use green yarn. If needed, use zip ties or other materials for a sturdier hold. Once the dinosaur is centered on the foam block, secure it in place with hot glue.

Step 6: Securing the Hula Hoop

The final step is attaching the hula hoop to the foam block to complete your centerpiece. Gently dig one end of the hula hoop into one side of the foam block. Repeat this process on the opposite side with the other end. If necessary, use scissors or another tool to carve out holes in the foam for the hula hoop to fit into.

Once both ends are inserted securely, remove them, fill the holes with hot glue, and place the hula hoop back inside. Hold the hoop in place until the glue dries and the hula hoop is stable.

Finishing Touches

Your dinosaur-themed centerpiece is now complete! You can add extra elements like artificial plants, small rocks, or party-themed decorations around the base to enhance the Jurassic vibe. This centerpiece will not only add excitement to your party but also serve as a creative conversation starter for guests.

By following these steps, you’ll create a unique and eye-catching decoration perfect for any dinosaur-themed party. Whether you’re throwing a "Three-Rex" bash or a full-on Jurassic event, this DIY dinosaur centerpiece will make the celebration unforgettable!
