Job Analysis and Job Description from Lucy Newman's blog

In the chosen episode of UnderCover Boss, the president of Cinnabon Incorporated Kate Cole was exploring the work of the company`s employees in four different locations. She has the experience of working in such positions as a supervisor, a machine operator on a plant, a coffee hostess, and a manager. The following essay provides the comparative analysis of a manager and a supervisor job positions. The key method applied for collecting information in this paper is literature survey. In order to create the holistic and generalized image of two occupations, a number of job analyzes and descriptions were explored and compared. To introduce the theoretical and classified information, such recourses as peer-reviewed articles and management guidelines were used in synopsis writing services

Kendra Palmer Royer (2010) suggests that a job analysis is “a collection of data on job-oriented and worker-oriented behaviors…” (p. 2). Consequently, this data is the basis for creation of job descriptions. In the fore mentioned episode, a young girl Mayra was performing the function of a supervisor, and an ambitious men Miguel served as a manager. In fact, both positions share a lot of similarities in terms of responsibilities, skills, and competence. For instance, if we create the hierarchy of skills required to perform these jobs, leadership will be on the top. However, in the first case, the main purpose of the leader is to ensure the effectiveness of team work, sales, and baking process, and in the second case, apart from the above mentioned function, manager should consider the increase of the revenue and creation of some strategies to achieve this objective. Therefore, if Mayra`s sphere of professional duties mainly regards the internal work of the cafe team; Miguel, in addition to this, is a mediator of the relations between his team and their customers. Moreover, the skill of great importance for both jobs is an ability to simultaneously exercise the control and coordination of various processes. Both the supervisor and the manager have to perceive their teams as a system. For the manager, it is also crucial to possess strategic thinking in order to establish the way of development for his team and create opportunities to increase the profit. As it is evident from the episode, age and experience requirements are more flexible in the supervisor position; hence, nineteen years old Mayra does not experience any difficulties in successful performance of supervision functions. However, for the position of manager companies usually require more experienced and elder employees, like Miguel.

Having analyzed these two positions, it is possible to create the following brief descriptions for the discussed job positions. A supervisor is a person granted by the employer with the authority to exercise the coordination and guidance of small groups of employees (in a particular case, the supervisor monitors the activity workers in Cinnabon cafe in a mall). The main duty of the supervisor is to discipline the workers, and, therefore, provide for effective manufacture and realization of the production in compliance with standards and values of the company. Moreover, qualified supervisor should be able to accomplish the following tasks:

· Exercise the effective coordination of the team work;

· Perform the role of team leader and team builder;

· Ensure the accomplishment of tasks given to the group of employees he or she is supervising;

· Be actively involved in multiple processes related to the work of group, manufacturing and selling the products;

· Motivate and develop other workers and keep the positive attitude of the group even in critical moments (Cadwell, 1999, p. 3).

Evidently, the profile of an excellent manager resembles the profile of a good supervisor. However, the position of manager is considered to be higher, and requires more responsibility and commitment of an employee to perform this function successfully. A manager is a person, who exercises the executive functions and leadership in specific group of workers (in particular case, the manager of Cinnabon shop). The main duty of the manager is to contribute to the effective performance of employees as well as increase the profit of the organization. Therefore, the manager should be proficient in such field as team leadership, sales, marketing, public relations etc. Generally speaking, the manager must accomplish the following key tasks:

· Set goals and create the strategies to reach them;

· Organize the system of work;

· Decide which employee fits a particular position the best;

· Motivate and encourage the employees;

· Be a principal channel of communication within the team;

· Measure and analyze the activity of the team, and use the received data so as to increase the performance and profit (“What Do Managers do”).

To ensure that the above provided job analysis and description correspond the federal regulations, the paper was created in compliance with job analysis presentation prepared by the Office of Personnel Management (“A New Day for Federal Service”). The presentation introduces general recommendation for creating job analysis as well as points out the important legal issues of this process.

Taking into account all discussed above, it is evident that the position of supervisor and manager share plenty of similarities, however the latter involves more multiple and complicated tasks and therefore requires more experience and responsibility from the employee.
